Professional Repair, recone, refoam

Description

Need speaker repair, refoam, or recone?  Since we sell hundreds of replacement speakers, you might think we’d suggest selling you new parts rather than repairing your old ones. There are a few reasons to consider repair over replacement. Download form at bottom of page.

Reason to repair:

  • The system has sentimental value
  • Your really like the performance
  • You want to keep it as “original” for future sale.
  • Replacing may cause more problems and cost - the cabinet and crossover was designed around the existing woofer. A different woofer may require a different box size and a redesign of the crossover network.
Reasons to replace:

  • The cabinets are of excellent quality and you want to redesign the whole system with high quality drivers.
  • These are your second set (garage / shop) speakers and just want to get them playing.
  • You want to get these playing to give them to your kids, brother, cousin, etc.

We use a few generic terms to describe the repair type.

Re-foam. A small microbe likes to eat foam and after about 10-15 years, most foam cone suspension will rot. We see a lot of old Advents, AR’s, JBL, etc. Rubber suspensions may turn brittle and crack as well as cloth, accordion edges. New foam is less susceptible to this.

Re-cone. This is a generic term for repairing a burned voice coil due to over powering. We usually need to replace most of the parts. On many specialty units, we can actually save the original cone..

Cost. There are far too many units and variables to have a price list, so you should call for an estimate. Many times we can’t be certain until we see the actual unit. To get you a starting reference, the minimum cost to “re-foam” is $42.00 + UPS and to “re-cone” the minimum is around $58.00 + UPS

Please call for a quote. We have genuine repair parts for Dynaudio, Scan Speak, Eton and many others. There have been only a few units that we were unable to fix.

How long does it take? Most re-foaming takes about 10 days in the shop. Many non-standard brands may take longer. Most re-coning takes about 2-3 weeks. Many times we need to special order parts that will extend wait time.
