The Night Moves Speaker Kit by CSS Audio and Meniscus Audio
Dan from CSS and I were talking a while back and we hit upon the idea of a joint venture “Michigan” kit. I sent over a set of our Eclipse woofers and Dan mated it up with the famous, LD22 tweeter. A few months later while in the Detroit area, I picked up the prototypes (See them below) and headed back for a listen.
I was stunned at how good they sounded. The bass was solid considering the woofer size. Voices were open and clear. treble was outstanding (This tweeter is a real sleeper) and nothing brought attention to itself – just a magnificent blend.
You can steal away every chance you get to the garage, basement, or trusty woodshop. You’re Just trying to make some front-page speaker-building news. No
mysteries while working on these beauties and we’ll give you plenty of clues.
The Drivers –
As mentioned, the tweeter is the CSS-Audio LD22, a 22mm soft dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet. This is a small dome that can keep up with most 1″ units. This tweeter is a freak.
The woofers are the Eclipse, W520R-8, 5.25″ with polypropylene cones and a copper tipped pole piece for low distortion.
The Crossover –
Dan worked his magic on this one. The crossover point is 1700Hz and is 3rd order electrical on the tweeter and 2nd order electrical on the woofers.
The Cabinet –
Built on a small, thin tower, it allows the tweeter to reach closer to ear level to make the most of the excellent imaging. The box is tuned to 41Hz with an F3 of 38Hz
Overall Dan Says “These are killer little woofers for and with a pair per side in a big vented cab, I wasn’t missing anything in terms of bass output. The crossover dialed in nicely and the impedance is really benign for a dual mid-woofer speaker. In fact, the impedance only dips to a 4.7-ohm minimum, so I’d probably consider this a 6-ohm speaker. This combo is very well balanced and I think it would appeal to a wide range of audiophile tastes.”
