The Premios Loudspeaker kit by Dan Neubecker
Carbon Fiber woofers are easy to find, but a tweeter with a carbon fiber dome is quite rare. The offering by Transducer Labs makes this full Carbon fiber kit a reality.
The Premios design surfaced at the 2016 Kentucky DIY and was well received. Dan had to delay the release of the design as the original woofer in this system was discontinued in favor of an updated design,
With the new woofers in place, a few changes to the network, and final listening tests, the Premios are now available to all to build. If you are up to the challenge, you can build the original faceted cabinet as pictured. Otherwise, the simple, slanted cabinet plan is included. You can view these in the pdf below.
If you look at the response curve, you’ll notice a sharp peak in the tweeter’s breakup mode at 20KHz. While Dan and most others cannot hear the peak, Dan does offer an add-on notch filter for those that might be bothered by this.
All the parts values and brands are specified by Dan, but I am sure he will allow brand changes if you prefer. Otherwise, here is the Bare Bones Parts List:
- 2 x Tweeters, Transducer Labs, N26CFR-A
- 2 x Woofers, Esoteric, ES180TiA-8
- 2 x Crossover components featuring Mundorf Supreme tweeter caps, Clarity CSA, Lynk resistors, and Air and laminate cored, inductors.
- Complete build plans.
After hearing the Premios, Craig K. remarked “I think the carbon fiber version is the best sounding tweeter that Transducer labs make”
It is rare to find a system of Dan’s to build. He usually specializes in the “out of the ordinary” designs using obscure components. This is your chance to experience a “Neubecker” creation!
– Please note that the crossover photo was taken before Dan specified the Mundorf Supreme capacitors.
